This interview was published for Fuorisalone.it
This last weekend in Paris we made a great tour through Maison & Object, one the most important design events in the world. With more than 85,000 visitors and 3,000 brands with the latest trends, Italy made an spectacular participation.
This edition, as every year, a country is invited as guest of honor. For this year Italy was the chosen by its design heritage spread through the world, consequently, 6 Italian raising talents were nominated to present their collections. The curation was made by 6 Italian masters, among them Rossana Orlandi and Giuglio Cappellini with whom we had the opportunity to talk in the in the cosmoplitan french capital. This is what we found out.
What do you see different this year from other editions?
R: It´s very interesting, I haven´t been here for the last 5 years, for me it´s been a fabulous surprise because I found a total change, much more interesting, with beautiful presentations, amazing ones. I´m really excited.
What you can say about the nominees for the raising talents?
R: Great! They´ve done a really excellent work, they are all so different, but all of them very good. For me it´s a pleaseure and a honor to be here today. I chose Giugelmo, I found him last year in Eindhoven it was the right occassion to promote him this year, he´s super young and talented.
What is your secret to be here today? Such strong career through the years?
G. Maybe we just like to be young designers (he laughs) , Rossana and me we have many thinks in common, we are always ready to take risks and that´s the most important thing. Not so many people in the world are ready to take risks, passion is also one thing we have in common.
Before being succesful you have to be open to take risks, this is so importnat for young designers. It´s always very important to be curious, to look around, to get in touch always with young people.
What you think is the new responsability for new designers?
G: They have do a better job from the designers of 30 years ago, now all designers have to try to make their best with beautiful and useful products, take care of real needs, for example nomadic design in terms of leaving. In the past you just cooked in your kitchen, now you work, cook, invite friends. We also have to think in tiny spaces for capitals, so it´s a huge responsability.
In the other side, the new generations of designers have to take care of new production systems and materials. There are millions ways to innovate now.
Which focus designers now at days have to envision their creativity?
R:It´s very important for them to know themselves, and to decide in which field of design they want to work.
Which are the main trends you see for design in the coming years?
G:Freedom, freedom for consumers to mix different products, freedom of designers to work with different companies in different time, in different parts of the world, so the real trend is freedom. Also designers have to be very coherent, and follow their own line.
I hate when companies work for a style that looks nice and not for a strong product. For us we have to create not nice things, but to do beuatiful things.
What do you think about estheticsm vs functionality?
G: Its a game. It seemed that in the past there was design and decoration, now you know what the limit between design and decoration is. Before design was black and white, now you use more materials, colors so the right thing right now is to find the right balance between function and beauty. No to be minimal or decorative, just the right balance and that will make the difference.
What do you think about a multi field designer?
G. Do few things, but do them good. Follow your project as a baby, from the beginning till the end. Sometimes it takes years to develop a product, but you have to very focused and work a lot. You have also to defend your own style.
R. Never loose your focus point, start with just one thing at a time.
What countries are the strongest in terms of design for trends and talented generation?
G: Really in over the world, in China we have right now excellent designers, photographers, artistsa nd writers. You can find talents all over the world.
R: But production just in Italy (she laughs)
